What a Complete Regulator Service Includes

A complete regulator service is not a partial teardown. Every stage comes apart. Every part is cleaned, inspected, and reassembled with manufacturer-required components. Here is the full process:

  • 1Complete disassembly of all stages, including console and gauges.
  • 2Hot water soap bath on all parts.
  • 3Ultrasonic cleaning of all metal parts.
  • 4Air dried and reassembled using new manufacturer-required components from the annual service kit.
  • 5Complete submersion in a water bath under 3,000 psi for a full leak test before return.

No time limits are set on service work. Each piece of equipment receives whatever time it requires to be completed properly.

Between services

Post-Dive Care: Extending the Life of Your Equipment

Annual service keeps your equipment working at specification. What you do between services determines how long that lasts. A few minutes of care after each dive significantly extends equipment life and reduces repair frequency.

Regulators

Fresh water rinse after every dive.

Rinse all stages with fresh water after every salt or freshwater dive. Never press the purge button while rinsing. Never soak with the dust cap off. Always store dry, never hanging from the hoses.

BCDs

Rinse inside and out.

Rinse the exterior and cycle fresh water through the BCD bladder via the inflator mechanism. Use the dump valves to drain completely. A commercial BCD cleaner like BC Life extends bladder life significantly.

Wetsuits

Rinse and air dry.

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Never put a wetsuit in a washing machine or dryer. If odor persists, use a commercial wetsuit cleaner like Sink the Stink. Store hanging or flat, not folded.

Storage

Never garage or attic storage in Texas.

Texas heat degrades rubber, O-rings, and bladder materials rapidly. Store all equipment indoors, out of direct sunlight, at room temperature. This applies year-round, not just in summer.

Why Tom’s for service

In 1982, Tom’s opened as a full-service dive shop. That has never changed. Equipment service is not an add-on at Tom’s: it is a core part of what we do. Every piece of equipment that leaves our shop has been serviced to manufacturer specifications, tested under pressure, and inspected by a technician who treats it as if they are going to dive on it.

Factory trained

Manufacturer-certified technicians.

Our technicians are factory trained for all major manufacturers we service. That means correct parts, correct procedures, and no guesswork about what goes back inside your regulator.

No time limits

Flat rate. However long it takes.

We charge a flat rate per service, regardless of time. There is no incentive to rush. Each piece of equipment gets whatever time it needs to be done correctly.

Since 1982

Four decades of Austin dive service.

Tom’s has been the service shop for Austin divers, government dive teams, and dive professionals since 1982. That kind of reputation is built one properly serviced regulator at a time.

Full-service fill station

Air and enriched air on-site.

Tom’s operates a certified fill station for standard air and enriched air (Nitrox). Bring your tanks in for analysis and fills. We can also visually inspect cylinders on-site.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my regulator be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend annual service for regulators that are used regularly, or once every two years for regulators used less frequently. If your regulator has been sitting unused for more than two years, service it before your next dive regardless of the calendar. When in doubt, bring it in: we will inspect it and give you an honest assessment of whether it needs service.

Do I need to make an appointment to bring in equipment?

No appointment is needed for drop-off. Bring your gear in during shop hours and we will take it in, assess what needs to be done, and follow up with a quote before work begins. If you have a specific deadline, let us know at drop-off and we will do our best to accommodate it.

How do I know when my equipment is ready?

We will contact you when service is complete. For shipped equipment, we return ship as soon as service and payment are confirmed. If you have a trip coming up, let us know the date and we will prioritize accordingly.

Do you service brands not on your list?

Call us at (512) 451-3425 and describe what you have. We may be able to service it, recommend a qualified technician, or at minimum inspect it and give you an honest assessment.
