The Earlier They Start, the More Comfortable It Can Become.
The earlier a child is introduced to water, the more comfortable and familiar it can become. Our infant and toddler swim lessons in Austin are parent-and-child lessons designed to build genuine water comfort at the age when it forms most easily — not through force, but through warm water, gentle progression, and consistent repetition.
Classes meet weekly and are billed at $36 per class on continuous enrollment. Three levels: parent-and-child classes for ages 6 months–2 years (you are in the pool), then Aquatike 1 and Aquatike 2 for ages 2–4 (parents not in the pool). All lessons are in our 91–92°F indoor pool. Book at austinswim.com →

New to the pool. Ready to start.
For children under 2, the parent-and-child class is the right starting point. You are in the water with your little one the entire time. The focus is comfort, not technique — getting your child relaxed and happy in the water is the first goal.
Comfortable in water. Ready to build independence.
Aquatike 2 is for toddlers who can go underwater comfortably and swim and float with minimal help. Classes in this level work toward greater independence from the parent and from the instructor.
Nervous around water. Warm pool helps.
A 91–92°F pool is a meaningfully different environment than a cold public pool. Warm water makes it easier for anxious children to stay calm and try new things. Our instructors are experienced with anxious children and build comfort before building skills.
Two Levels, Clear Progression.
Ages 6 months–2 years
Parent-and-child format — you are in the pool the entire class. For children who are new to the water. Focus: water comfort, submersion, basic movement, and building positive associations with the pool. Class ratio: 4:1.
Ages 2–4 · New to the water
For toddlers who are new to the pool or not yet comfortable in the water. Parents are not in the pool for this level. Focus: submersion comfort, relaxed floating with support, basic kicks and movement. The class builds positive associations with water before building skills.
Ages 2–4 · Building independence
For toddlers who can go underwater comfortably and can swim and float with minimal assistance. Parents are not in the pool for this level. Focus: extending independence from support, improving body position, preparing for transition to children’s classes at age 5.

What Happens in the Pool
Parent-and-child classes are structured around repetition and positive reinforcement. Our instructors will guide you through activities in the pool with your child — submersion exercises, floating positions, kicking, and water movement. You are an active participant, not a spectator.
It is completely normal for babies and toddlers to cry or resist at first. Many children who initially resist the water become more comfortable after a few consistent weeks. Our instructors are experienced with this and will never force or rush a child through something they are not ready for. Consistency matters more than any single lesson — showing up each week is the most important thing you can do.
Tom’s teaches a tools-based curriculum, which means physical training aids isolate specific movements and reduce the child’s reliance on the instructor. The goal is a child who can perform skills independently — not one who can only do it with support.
Classes are small by design (max 4 students) and meet at the same time each week. Consistency matters for this age group — regular weekly attendance produces better outcomes than sporadic intensive sessions.
Why Parents Bring Their Youngest to Tom’s
91–92°F makes a real difference for babies and toddlers
Cold water can make young children tense, distracted, and less willing to participate. Our 91–92°F pool helps with that. Many parents find that their children are calmer, more engaged, and more willing to try new things in a warm pool.
A curriculum built around independence, not support.
We use the SSI Swim Schools International curriculum with tools that allow children to focus on individual movements. The goal is genuine swimming ability — not dependence on the instructor or the noodle.
A team that knows how to work with the youngest swimmers.
Our swim instructors are trained, background-checked, and experienced working with the youngest swimmers. Working with infants and toddlers requires patience, play instincts, and the ability to read a child’s comfort level in real time. They will never rush or force a child who is not ready.
No semester windows. Enroll when you’re ready.
No semester start dates. Enroll when you’re ready, hold your spot month to month, and give 30 days notice if you need to stop. For Austin families with busy schedules, not having to plan around a fixed session calendar makes a real difference.
Your First Visit — What to Expect
Arrival

What to bring
Swimsuit for you and your child. Swim diaper required for children who are not potty trained (disposable or reusable). Towel and a change of clothes for both of you. Goggles are optional at this age.
You’re in the pool
You get in the water with your child for every class. Wear a swimsuit you are comfortable moving in. Your instructor leads the session — you follow along and support your child. Other parents and siblings can watch from our viewing area.
If your child cries
Completely normal, especially in the first few sessions. Our instructors are experienced with adjustment periods and will never force anything. Consistent attendance is what creates comfort. Many children become more comfortable after a few consistent weeks.
