Teaching Austin to dive and swim since 1982, before any of the other Austin dive shops opened. Family owned. Austin’s only SSI Dive Center. A warm indoor pool, experienced instructors, and a community of divers built one certification at a time.
What We Believe
At Tom’s, diving is more than earning certifications. It is about capability, judgment, and trust. This is not a rulebook. It is a shared understanding of what it means to be part of this dive community, both underwater and topside.
Capability Over Certification
A certification is only as good as your ability to use it. Your CPR card is good until the day you forget CPR. We treat certifications as proof of exposure to training. Real capability is retained skill and judgment, maintained through practice.
Education Plus Purposeful Practice
Training should reduce surprises underwater. Confidence comes from preparation, not luck. Safety is never a trade off. It is the foundation everything else is built on.
Responsibility Starts at the Buddy Level
You are your own dive supervisor, and your buddy’s backup plan. We call this being Dive Ready: prepared to manage your own dive, recognize stress early, and stay calm when things do not go as planned.
Coach Before We Criticize
We respect experience and curiosity. We support learning and second chances. We hold ourselves accountable. How we treat each other in the shop shows up in how we care for people in the water.
Membership Has Meaning
Being part of Tom’s Dive & Swim, whether as staff or as a student, is a choice. With that choice comes responsibility, professionalism, curiosity, and respect for others. We are building divers we would trust with our own families. This is the TDS Way, not because it is written down, but because it is practiced every day, in the shop and in the water.

Tom’s opened in 1982, before any other Austin dive shop still in business today. Over four decades in the same city, with the same commitment to building real divers. That kind of staying power comes from doing it right, one diver at a time.
A different approach to certification.
Both Austin competitors are PADI. Tom’s is the only SSI Dive Center in Austin. SSI certifications never expire, training is digital-first through the MySSI app, and our philosophy is built around capability that holds up, not just a card to carry.

Our heated indoor pool runs at 91°F regardless of season. Austin winters are cold and most outdoor pools close entirely. Your training schedule continues on your schedule, not the weather’s.
