Why We Dive — Getting Back in the Water
Gary Leach Apr 26, 2026
Recently, I learned that the diving world lost one of its pioneers in scuba travel, Wayne Brown, founder of Aggressor Adventures. His vision helped shape what dive travel looks like today—creating opportunities for divers to explore some of the best locations in the world, safely and consistently, year after year.
I happened to be in Bonaire at the time, working with students as they completed their SSI Advanced Open Water Diver certifications—exactly the kind of experience he helped make possible for so many divers.
It led me to reflect on what diving has given me over the years.
One moment that stands out was a week in Turks & Caicos aboard one of his boats, where I made my 1,000th dive and earned the Iron Diver Award. It wasn’t just about the number. It was about being in the water every day, fully immersed in the experience.
That’s what stays with you.
The places, of course—the reefs, the marine life, the clarity of the water. But just as much, it’s the people you meet along the way. Diving has a way of bringing people together from all over the world and making it feel smaller, more connected—one dive at a time.
Wayne built a life around making those experiences possible. Even if you never met him, there’s a good chance you’ve benefited from what he helped create.
It’s a reminder that the things we value most in diving don’t happen by accident. They come from time in the water.
Dive after dive.
Getting Back in the Water
That’s what this time of year is about.
As the season begins, it’s a chance to get back in, rebuild your rhythm, and set yourself up for the kind of experiences that stay with you.
It doesn’t take much.
A few dives.
A refresher.
A little time to settle back in.
From there, everything opens up again.
