Group Swim Lessons Austin, TX · Ages 6 Months to 12 Years · 90°F Heated Pool

Group Swim Lessons in Austin: Comfort First, Skill Second, At Every Age.

Whether your child is six months old and meeting the water for the first time, or twelve years old and refining flip turns, the goal is the same: a child who is genuinely comfortable and capable in the water, not just performing for an instructor. Our group swim lessons in Austin are built around two age tracks so every child is taught the way that stage of childhood actually learns.

Classes meet once per week at $36 per class, billed monthly, continuous enrollment. Maximum four students per instructor. All classes follow the structured SSI Swim curriculum in our 90°F indoor pool.

Early Childhood (Infant & Toddler)

Ages 6 months to 5 years Tap to expand

The first goal is not swimming. The first goal is trust. Four levels take a swimmer from their first time in the water through independent front-and-back swimming, breaststroke arms, and dolphin kick: Guppies, Starfish, Seahorse, and Jellyfish. Placement follows skill-based levels, not birthday alone, so a five-year-old may start here or in School Age depending on what they can already do. Austin parents often land here after searching for baby swim lessons, infant swim classes, or swim lessons for toddlers near me: all describe this same gentle, trust-building track starting as young as six months.

Children swim independently in group classes from age 5 onward: parents watch from the viewing area. Four levels take a swimmer from their first strokes through 25-yard freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and flip turns: Sea Turtles, Dolphins, Sharks, and Barracudas. Children advance when they demonstrate the skills, not when a semester ends.

What Level Is My Swimmer?

Match your swimmer to the description below that fits best, and that’s their starting level. Guppies (6 months to 2 years) is a separate, age-based entry point, not a skill level; every other level is skill-based, so children the same age can land in different classes depending on what they can already do.

New to the pool, any age

First time in the water

Guppies and Sea Turtles both meet children exactly where they are: comfort first, positive associations second, and skills once the child is ready.

Building toward independence

Comfortable, but not swimming solo yet

Starfish, Seahorse, and Dolphins are the bridge between water comfort and real independent swimming, at whichever age your child is on that path.

Ready for refinement

Swims independently, ready to sharpen skills

Jellyfish and Sharks are building real strokes and endurance; Barracudas is ready for 25-yard freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and flip turns. The focus shifts to technique and refinement.

Nervous or hesitant swimmers

Had a hard time in other programs

Small class ratios, maximum four students per instructor, and a warm pool create an environment where hesitant swimmers of any age can build real confidence.

Already mastered Barracudas skills? Ask us about private lessons for continued refinement, joining a swim team, or lifeguarding. Still not sure where your swimmer fits? A free placement assessment takes the guesswork out: an instructor evaluates your child and confirms the right starting level. Book a free assessment online.

Why Tom’s for group swim lessons

Why Austin Families Keep Coming Back

Small classes: real attention

Your child should never feel lost in the crowd.

Every group class is capped at four students per instructor. That is not a target average: it is the maximum, at every age we teach, from Guppies through Barracudas.

Warm pool year-round

90°F, every month of the year.

Austin winters are not warm, and most outdoor pools close or go cold. A warm pool helps the youngest swimmers relax and helps older children stay focused and engaged, regardless of season.

Skill-based progression, at any age

They move up when they are ready. Not when the semester ends.

From Guppies through Barracudas, children advance when they demonstrate the skills. Children who are ready move up quickly; children who need more time get it.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Tap any question to expand the answer.

My child is nervous or hesitant about swimming. Will that be a problem?

Not at all: this is one of the most common reasons parents choose Tom’s, at every age we teach. We do not treat hesitation as a problem. We treat it as information about where to start. Our instructors build trust before pushing skill, using warm water, encouragement, and small steps that give children genuine wins before asking for harder things. Some children relax in the first class; others take a few weeks, and tears in those first few sessions are completely normal too: our instructors are experienced with adjustment periods and will never force anything. Consistent weekly attendance is what creates comfort. If your child has specific concerns, call us before enrolling: we can help you figure out whether group lessons or a private lesson is the better starting point.

How do I know which track and level is right for my child?

Use the track and level descriptions above: Early Childhood for ages 6 months to 5 years, School Age for ages 5 to 12. If you are unsure, a free placement assessment is available: an instructor evaluates your child and recommends the right class. Book a free assessment online.

How much do group swim classes cost at Tom’s?

$36 per class, billed monthly with continuous enrollment. If you are unsure which level or track fits your child, a free placement assessment is available to confirm the right starting point. Book a free assessment online.

How young can a child start, and do I get in the pool with them?

We accept children from 6 months old. For ages 6 months to 2 years, classes are parent-and-child format and you are in the water the entire time; one parent or guardian per child. From age 2 on, children swim independently with their instructor and parents watch from the viewing area instead, which has seating and quiet activities for siblings. Either way, at least one parent or guardian (18 or older) needs to stay in the building for the full class, and parents aren’t permitted in the pool room during the lesson unless an instructor or manager calls you in. Children must be able to support their own head to start at 6 months; if you have questions about whether your child is ready, call us at (512) 451-3425.

What do the level names mean, and how does my child move up?

Each level has a specific skill checklist your child needs to demonstrate before moving up. For example, Starfish adds an independent monkey-crawl exit and an assisted front glide; Jellyfish adds 12-yard freestyle and backstroke, breaststroke arms, and dolphin kick. Sea Turtles and Dolphins in the School Age track mirror the Starfish and Seahorse skill sets; Sharks and Barracudas build toward 25-yard strokes and flip turns. Placement follows the same skill-based progression in both tracks: ask your instructor any time exactly which skills your child is working on.

How long does it take to advance to the next level?

It depends on the child. Progress is skill-based, not time-based, in both tracks. Our team will let you know how your child is progressing and when they look ready to move up. We celebrate progress at every step, not just when a child moves up.

How long is each group swim class?

30 minutes, once per week, in our 90°F indoor pool. Some slots run two classes at once in separate lanes with separate instructors.

What should we bring to class?

A swimsuit, goggles, and a towel. Children who are not potty trained need a swim diaper (disposable or reusable) under their swimsuit. No fins, floaties, or swim aids: we provide any tools needed during class.

What should I expect at my child’s first class?

Arrive a few minutes early for your first class. Come in through the main entrance at 5909 Burnet Rd and let the front desk know you are here for swim lessons. A typical 30-minute class includes a warm-up, focused skill work, and a short practice swim to finish. Progress looks different for every child: our team will let you know how your child is doing and when they are approaching readiness to advance.

How can we help our child practice between classes?

Even bathtub exercises that reinforce movements from class help. When your child has pool access outside of lessons, 10 to 15 minutes of unassisted practice, without floaties, builds the independence lessons work toward.

My child needs more one-on-one attention. What do you recommend?

Private and semi-private lessons are available for children age 2 and up who want more individual instruction or are working through a specific challenge: see our Private & semi-private lessons.

What swim options are available after completing Barracudas?

After completing Barracudas, many children move on to private lessons for stroke refinement, join a swim team, pursue lifeguarding, or carry their water confidence into open water, snorkeling, or eventually scuba diving. The skills built here last a lifetime.

Where can we change before and after class?

Tom’s has two changing rooms and two bathrooms available for swim lesson families, located inside the facility. Swimsuit changes need to happen in one of these rooms, not the lobby, viewing area, or pool room. Plan to arrive a few minutes early for your first visit to get oriented.

How many group swim lessons does it take for my child to learn to swim?

It depends on your child’s age, comfort level, and starting point, so there is no single number that fits every swimmer. Children who attend consistently, once per week, tend to move through the levels steadily; your child’s instructor can give you a realistic sense of timeline once they have seen a few classes.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy for swim lessons?

A 30-day advance notice is required to cancel enrollment, and individual lesson absences use a make-up token system. See the full group lessons cancellation policy on our Swim Lessons page.
