A manta ray gliding overhead is one of the most talked-about encounters in diving, and most divers cannot tell a manta from a mobula, explain why it circled the same spot repeatedly, or say what a cleaning station actually is, even right after watching one in action.
SSI Manta and Ray Ecology teaches you to tell sharks from rays, identify common ray species, and understand manta ray behavior, feeding, and the cleaning stations they depend on. Self-paced academics, with an optional open water application dive. $150. Open to everyone, certified diver or not. Minimum age 10.

What Manta and Ray Ecology Actually Covers

"Manta rays are aggressive or dangerous."
Mantas are filter feeders with no stinger, consuming vast amounts of zooplankton. They pose no threat to divers who give them appropriate space.
"Rays and sharks are unrelated animals."
Both are elasmobranchs with cartilaginous skeletons, closely related despite very different body shapes and behavior.
"All rays can sting you."
Only certain species, such as stingrays, carry a venomous spine. Most rays covered in this course, including mantas, have no stinger at all.
"Cleaning stations are just random encounters."
Cleaning stations are predictable behavioral sites where mantas and other animals return specifically to be cleaned by smaller fish, a real and well-documented mutualism.
What You’ll Train
Primarily an academic course, with an optional open water application dive.
Gill location, swimming pattern, and feeding differences that separate rays from sharks, and the major ray orders: Myliobatiformes, Rajiformes, Torpediniformes, and Rhinopristiformes.
Practical identification of skates, stingrays, eagle rays, and mobula rays by their distinguishing features.
Manta ray evolution, classification, feeding behavior, mating behavior, and the cleaning stations that structure much of their daily movement.
An optional dive applying what you have learned, wherever local conditions and marine life allow for meaningful observation.

Do I need to be certified to take this course?
No. The academic portion is open to anyone. You only need Open Water certification if you choose to complete the optional open water application dive.
Are manta rays dangerous?
No. Mantas are filter feeders with no stinger. They pose no threat to divers who give them appropriate space.
What is a cleaning station?
A predictable site, often near coral outcrops, where mantas and other animals return to have parasites and dead skin removed by smaller cleaner fish, a genuine mutualistic relationship.
How are rays related to sharks?
Both are elasmobranchs with cartilaginous skeletons. This course and Shark Ecology cover the two halves of that relationship.
