Dominica’s dive sites are volcanic in character: slopes, pinnacles, and underwater features shaped by geology rather than the flat reef profiles common across the Caribbean. Visibility is strong. Marine life density is high. And the sperm whales that frequent Dominican waters are a legitimate encounter, not a chance sighting.
Fort Young Hotel sits on the waterfront in Roseau, the capital. Diving is organized through the hotel’s dive operation. Days are structured around morning and afternoon boat dives, with shore diving available in between. The guided excursions to Trafalgar Falls and Titou Gorge give you the island above the water, which is as dramatic as anything below it.

Dominica is a volcanic island, and that geology shows up underwater as much as it does on land. At Champagne Reef, natural volcanic gas rises through the sand in shallow, sunlit water, streaming past you in a wall of bubbles that genuinely feels like diving through a glass of champagne. It is one of the more unusual dive sites in the Caribbean, and it is included in this trip.
Dominica also benefits from nutrient-rich Atlantic water that feeds a genuinely dense reef ecosystem. Beyond the big encounters, the macro life is excellent: nudibranchs, seahorses, barrel sponges, and arrow crabs turn up on nearly every dive for divers willing to slow down and look closely.

Yes. Dominica welcomes divers at all experience levels. The diving takes place in open water environments, so newer divers get extra support from our team while more experienced divers can range further. What is the flight gateway for Dominica?
Dominica’s airport code is DOM. Most flights route through Puerto Rico (SJU), Barbados (BGI), or Antigua (ANU), direct flights are available from Miami. Airfare is not included. Tom’s recommends booking flights as soon as your spot is confirmed, as routing to Dominica can be limited.
Is there whale watching on every trip?
Dominica is home to 22 species of whales and dolphins, and it is the only country in the world with a year-round resident population of sperm whales. Whale watching is included as an excursion, though actual sightings depend on conditions and animal behavior. November is generally a reliable month for encounters.
Is Dominica the same as the Dominican Republic?
No, and this is a common mix-up. Dominica is a small, independent island nation in the Eastern Caribbean, southeast of the Virgin Islands. The Dominican Republic is a much larger country that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, hundreds of miles away. Dominica is volcanic, mountainous, and known for dense rainforest rather than resort development, which is exactly what makes its diving and its landscape distinctive.
Is dive and travel insurance required?
Dive accident insurance and trip cancellation insurance are strongly recommended for all Tom’s trips, and especially for international travel. Neither is included in the package price. Typical travel insurance policies include protection from unforeseen medical or weather events.
Should I do any courses before this trip?
