Coral is an animal, not a rock or a plant, and every coral head is actually a colony of individual polyps, each building its own limestone home. Once you know that, a reef stops looking like scenery and starts looking like a structure you can actually read: what is healthy, what is stressed, and why.
SSI Coral Identification teaches you coral biology, classification, and the common families of the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea. Self-paced academics, with an optional open water application dive. $150. Open to everyone, certified diver or not. Minimum age 10.

"Coral is a plant or a rock."
Coral is an animal. Each individual polyp builds a limestone skeleton, and successive generations of these skeletons are what form a coral reef.
"I need to touch coral to identify it."
Identification is entirely visual, based on growth form, corallite shape, and spacing. Coral should never be touched or handled.
"Identifying species is the expectation."
In the field, most coral can only be identified to the genus or family level. This course builds exactly that realistic skill.
"This is the same as Marine Ecology."
Marine Ecology covers the big-picture structure of ocean zones. Coral Identification goes deep on recognizing specific coral families and reef systems.
What You’ll Train
Primarily an academic course, with an optional open water application dive.
Polyps, corallites, and colonies, hard versus soft coral, the role of coral reefs, zooxanthellae, coral bleaching, and mass coral spawning.
Binomial nomenclature and taxonomic classification, then the practical steps for identifying coral by growth form, corallite type, and spacing.
Common coral families of the Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Red Sea, so you recognize what is actually in front of you wherever you travel.
An optional dive applying what you have learned to identify coral families and assess reef health in a real environment.

Do I need to be certified to take this course?
No. The academic portion is open to anyone. You only need Open Water certification if you choose to complete the optional open water application dive.
Can I identify coral down to the species level?
